Guided tour of Bourlatier Farm

Associations:Home/Events/Guided tour of Bourlatier Farm

Description

At an altitude of over 1,300 m, in the sensitive natural area of the Gerbier and Mézenc mountains, the Bourlatier Farm stands amidst the vast landscapes of the Ardèche plateau.

This iconic site powerfully testifies to the ingenuity of mountain farmers and the richness of the Ardèche's rural heritage. Dating from the 17th century and once part of a seigniorial estate that included three other farms, Bourlatier impresses with its dimensions (50 meters long by 12 meters wide), its monumental timber frame, and its 900 m² roof covered with 150 tons of slate. Until the 1950s, it housed intense agricultural activity: livestock, crops, dairy production, firewood… a self-sufficient agricultural world deeply rooted in its environment.

Owned by the LIGER association since 1987, the farm has benefited from its members' commitment to safeguarding and promoting the architectural heritage of the Ardèche mountains. The site was awarded the "Masterpieces in Peril" prize in 1988 for the quality of its restoration. In partnership with the Ardèche Department, which now manages the site under a long-term lease, it has become a "Memory Farm," hosting temporary exhibitions each year on the skills, history, landscapes, and contemporary issues of the region.

A sculpture by Maxime Descombin "Flore Faune Minéral", 1962 – 1984 / Steel, concrete (Collection Institut d'art contemporain Villeurbanne/Rhône-Alpes), is installed in front of the Bourlatier farm.

Ideally located 3 km from Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, the Bourlatier farm is the perfect complement to a visit to the Maison du Gerbier, allowing you to discover from the inside one of the most remarkable buildings in the Gerbier-Mézenc region. The Nature Encounters program invites you to explore the Sensitive Natural Area of Mont Gerbier and Mont Mézenc.

This program is offered to you by the Ardèche Department.
