Description
On the Grand Site of the Aven d'Orgnac, a few steps from the exit of the Cave, the Cité de la Préhistoire evokes 350 years of human adventures through collections, local remains of human occupation. To visit before or after the Aven d'Orgnac!
Located a stone's throw from the Gorges de l'Ardèche, the Aven d'Orgnac is a unique place in several respects: a site classified for its scientific value, it is labeled a Grand Site de France for its sustainable and respectful management of a exceptional natural site. It offers in the same space a plurality of activities allowing us to understand both the geological evolution of the sector and its occupation by man over time, particularly within the City of Prehistory.
The Cité de la Préhistoire – a modern and fun museum space, labeled Musée de France – allows you to understand the thousand-year-old history of the earth and its inhabitants. Visiting the Cité de la Préhistoire is to experience a moving face-to-face with our ancestors and better understand who these children, women and men were who were not so far from us!
In this museographic space, which spans 350 years of human adventures - from the Middle Paleolithic to the First Iron Age - authentic objects from excavations in Ardèche and the north of Gard are presented in a redesigned museography, made of multi-player touch tables, engaging soundscapes, explanatory videos, life-size illustrations, etc. A modern and emotional visit which offers a new look at the exposed remains and depending on the season, by experiencing the Prehistory activities: fire, flint, shooting with assegais!

Continue your visit to the Grand Site de France via the Orgnac sinkhole, the Cave, which adjoins the Cité de la Préhistoire.
It surprises with its gigantic volumes and the beauty of its underground landscapes. Giant palm trees, translucent, eccentric palm trees, candles, organ cases, columns, ocher draperies, clay fir trees... nestled in balance under ceilings that can reach up to 55 meters high.
