St. Clair Chapel

Home/Built heritage/St. Clair Chapel
Going deeper into the woods of Issanlas, you will arrive at the Chapelle Saint-Clair, whose waters from the fountain are said to cure eye diseases.

Description

“The current building, isolated on the edge of the woods, was built on the site of a pagan sanctuary, near Roman roads passing through Pradelles and Le Pal. It is a granite cube of massive appearance and of modest dimensions. A recent restoration was the occasion to replace the old roof covered with grass by a new cover of red tiles which seemed to us somewhat incongruous. Inside, placed in front of the altar, a polychrome wooden statue, probably from the XNUMXth century, represents the saint venerated in this place, who is invoked for sight problems and whose cult is linked to the presence of a source, reputed to be effective in this area and located two hundred meters to the south, on the edge of a “narce”. Tradition reports that Saint Clair was a shepherd and that his burial is here, under the cross in front of the chapel. Formerly dependent on the abbey of Mazan, this chapel is today the place of a very popular pilgrimage, on the fourth Sunday of June. »
