Description

The 53° hot water fountain in Saint-Laurent-les-Bains is located in the heart of the village. It comes out naturally at this temperature. As it descends deeper, it warms up and becomes loaded with mineral salts.

The water of the fountain comes from filtrations along large faults.

Its high temperature of 53° is explained by the rapid rise in water along a large fault. The depth could reach 2500 meters.
The waters have no time to cool.

The estimated travel time, from the infiltration of precipitation on the heights, until the emergence of thermal water is around 17.000 years (carbon 14 dating).

The current fountain was erected in 1877. The stone comes from the quarries of Ruoms in Ardèche.

In the past, the public fountain consisted simply of a hollow tree trunk fitted with a drain pipe.

This fountain has long been used by the inhabitants of the village, to wash clothes, dishes and even vegetables….

But it was also, like many other washhouses, a real place of meeting and "chattering"...
