Work The Lighthouse by Gloria Friedmann – The Parting of the Waters

Home/Contemporary heritage/Work The Lighthouse by Gloria Friedmann – The Parting of the Waters
Located overlooking the Borne valley, with its exceptional view of the Atlantic and Mediterranean watersheds. This “refuge” place invites rest and contemplation. Work by Gloria Friedmann in the context of the Sharing of Waters.

Description

“By creating this refuge tower which represents both the art of line and the art of withdrawal, I want to pay homage to nature to observe the horizon line, this vibrant space. I would like this blue space to become a sort of machine to slow down time, I would like its visitors to “waste” their time there. »

Gloria FRIEDMANN

The Lighthouse is a blue monochrome vertical that rises more than seven meters from the ground. It reveals a site emblematic of the contrasts which characterize the watershed: the steep slopes of the Mediterranean slope meet the gentle undulations of the Atlantic side.

This work is therefore a beacon common to the sea and the ocean, into which visitors are invited to access. From the observation floor, a 360° view opens up over the landscape. A circular bench invites rest and contemplation. It houses a library whose works allow you to better understand the history, the biodiversity of the surrounding area, life on the Ardèche mountains, while opening your horizons to the maritime world and elsewhere.

The Lighthouse “calls up the idea of the sea” which we don’t see anywhere…
He guides and protects the traveler.
It offers a panoramic view of the landscape.
It attracts attention and “lights up” the surrounding area.
He's watching.

The works present in the library and the stories made available to the public of the Lighthouse were collected thanks to the Guardians of the Lighthouse (Magali Gleyze, Thierry Champel, Jean-Louis Cellier, Raoul Julien Gleyze, Jean Luc Gaillard, Daniel Michau, Thierry Tailland ), members of the La Bourniquelle Association and the Borne municipal council.

The Lighthouse is open all year round; the door pushes inwards. Please do not block its opening. Upstairs and for safety reasons, windows must not be opened; the Lighthouse lives naturally to the rhythm of the seasons. If you notice any problem, please inform the Auberge du Bez or call the Monts d'Ardèche Regional Natural Park.

Since the 1980s, Gloria Friedmann has developed work where nature and animals are omnipresent. The German artist, based in France since 1977, denounces the degradation of our ecosystem and the fragility of life. With a sensitive look and a strong presence of symbolism, his works deal with the posture of man facing his environment and question the evolution of humanity with its doubts and its wanderings.

Twenty years ago, in 1997, Gloria Friedmann created the “Red Square” which has become an emblematic piece of in situ art in nature in France. This large monochrome red painting planted in the greenery of the Burgundian countryside is none other than one of the surrounding walls of a refuge in which the visitor can spend the night. Gloria Friedmann continues to maintain this link between sculpture, architecture and nature in the work she erects as part of PARTAGE DES EAUX.

Gloria Friedmann's work has been presented in numerous personal exhibitions: at the Center Pompidou in Paris (1980 & 1995), at the Kunststation in Cologne (2003), at the Fondation Maeght in Saint-Paul de Vence (2013) and even at the Paris Hunting Museum (2016). His work is regularly presented in group exhibitions.
