Description
Saint Etienne de Lugdarès is located in France, in the Ardèche department, upper Vivarais region, upper Allier basin, on the road to Tanargue, in the Masméjean valley, an altitude river (1033 m) , with lively and oxygenated waters.
Chief town of canton, it acts there of the principal commune of the canton.
Its area is 4 ha. Its rise is recent and linked to the decline of Borne.
Its XNUMXth century church is nicknamed Cathedral of the Mountain and houses the High Altar of the former Chambons Abbey.
Traces of the village can be found in a few historical collections… the so-called Beast of Gévaudan made its first victim there: Jeanne Boulet in 1764.
On a secular register, “Papillon” (Henri Charrière) was born here.
There is also the hamlet of Hubacs, a small village in the enclosed valley on the northern slope (Ubac).
Cathedral of the mountain: church of Gothic origin, recomposed, in granite and volcanic stones of different colors, whose high altar comes from the abbey of Chambons de Borne. Bichrome walls, origin dating back to 1302.
