Village of Boree

Home/Village of Boree
In the heart of the Boutières region (Haute Ardèche) and near Mont Mézenc, the town of Borée is surrounded by a very rich natural heritage and offers magnificent landscapes. It also has several special features.

Description

The first is the atypical facade of its church, made of different types of stones: yellow tuff, granite, trachyte and red scoria. All these stones come from different volcanoes in the region. It is the same for the roof, in phonolite. This mixture of stones gives the church a colorful and therefore very lively appearance. The other specificity of the church of Borée is its black Madonna placed above the main altar. The Black Madonna is often depicted with a crown and has held an important place in Christian spirituality. She was even the protector of the Knights Templar and the Teutonic Knights. This type of statue was an object of pilgrimage with great healing and fertility power.
Located on the hillside facing it, the second particularity of the village, the Tchier de Borée, is a real curiosity. This is a monumental calendar. Composed of 70 stones arranged in a very precise manner (the word "Tchier" means pile of stones in the local patois), it covers a circle 79,20 meters in diameter surrounded by a low stone wall.
Each calendar stone has a name and a meaning. The one in the center is the stone of the white boar. We also find the stone of creation, the stone of reception, the stone of enthusiasm, the stone of growth, the stone of measurement,... Nine themes make up the Tchier de Borée: memory - reflection and philosophers - secrets and desires – travelers and pilgrims, astronomers and cartographers – surveyors – delights and contemplations – writings – solidarities – poems and mythologies. On a large part of the stones there are inscriptions (in Latin and local patois), signs and engraved images. These stones are numbered, and we can see bands below the numbers.
A work of art in its own right, the Tchier de Borée also plays an educational role, telling the cultural history of the high country of Boutières. Her goals ? Knowledge, the transmission of knowledge, of an identity, the holding of festivals. This monument will not fail to amaze visitors with its size and mystical dimension.
