Description
Lachamp Raphaël is a very old town as evidenced by its built heritage: the castle of Raphaël belonged to the monks of the Abbey of Saint-Chaffre-du-Monastier. The remains of Raphaël's castle occupy the summit of a volcanic sap at an altitude of 1307 metres: the Rocher de Raphaël. Raphaël's castle appears for the first time in written documentation in the last quarter of the twelfth century, thanks to a transaction between the Carthusians of Bonnefoy and the Cistercians of Aiguebelle. Then, the castle of Raphaël passed into the heritage of the counts of Valentinois from the beginning of the thirteenth century. The beautiful village church has a listed sixteenth century bell.
The hamlets scattered over the town still have a few houses with slate roofs made from a volcanic rock called phonolite. There are even still a few roofs of broom.
