Village of Sainte-Eulalie

Associations:Home/Village of Sainte-Eulalie

Description

Sainte-Eulalie, a charming village in the land of the sources of the Loire, owes its name to a young Spanish Christian, martyr of the XNUMXrd century. During your walk, you will discover the Clastres farm, a model of traditional local architecture.

Sainte-Eulalie is one of the highest villages in the Ardéchoise Mountain and the first village in France watered by the Loire. All the springs that compete for the honor of being the true source of the Loire (and there are several) are found in the commune of Ste Eulalie. It is Mont Gerbier de Jonc, a must-see tourist site in the Ardéchoise Mountain, which is home to the sources of the Loire. During the ascent of the Gerbier de Jonc, phonolitic juice and ancient volcano, you can observe a large part of the territory of the young volcanoes of Ardèche. Around the village, the generous flora comes under evocative names such as yellow gentian, daffodil, narcissus, Martagon lily...
Sports friends, know that the village of Ste Eulalie was the cradle of skiing in the Ardèche, well before 1914. Indeed, cross-country skiing, jumping, speed competitions... were already organized there, from the winter of 1908- 1909, under the impetus of Mr. Jean D'Indy. The history of Sainte-Eulalie begins in 1078. On this date the Church of Sainte-Eulalie was donated to the Abbey of Saint-Théofrède du Monastier (Haute-Loire) by Odilon Bello and Bertrand Mercoeur and his wife Guilherma, with everything that belonged to him and two outbuildings. The name of the town comes from a young Spanish Christian, martyred in the 1464rd century, Eulalie de Mérida. The Benedictine monks of the abbey of Saint-Chaffre du Monastier in Haute-Loire, provided parish service. A church was built in XNUMX, in the extension of the Clastres farm (the cloister). All that remains is the base of the bell tower, the baptistery and a wolf or bear head gargoyle embedded in the facade. Font de Loire will be the name of the village during the Revolution.
The Clastres farm is a model of traditional architecture in the Pays des Sources de la Loire, as is the Andéol farm at the foot of the Monts Sepous (in ruins), Lauzière and Montfol, the Rudel farm in broom and slate, the Lagarde estate, dating from the 1622th century, Philip's farm (XNUMX) below the Gerbier (the owner is a lauzeur and broom picker), the Geographical source of the Loire farm at the foot of the Gerbier, the Moulin du ligeret (liger means Loire) at the confluence of the Loire and its first tributary, the farm of Césarié,… Many carved stone crosses testify to a considerable oral culture conducive to legends and tales.
