Village of Le Roux

Home/Village of Le Roux
A small village on the mountainside, Le Roux, made up of four hamlets, welcomes you between the Cévennes and the Ardéchoise Mountain.

Description

The commune of Roux is located on the southern flank of the Ardèche Mountain, between 750 and 1 meters above sea level. Benefiting at the same time from the privileges of altitude and maximum exposure to the rays of the sun, it enjoys a healthy and temperate climate, probably at the origin of its creation, well before the Christian era. About forty inhabitants live permanently in this commune. In summer, many lovers of peace and quiet come to join them to taste the rustic pleasures of hiking or mountain biking, fishing in white water, hunting, etc...

Like many villages with an essentially agricultural past, the activity of this country is still dominated by livestock farming. The development of this country towards other activities is perceptible, but the apparent slowness of these developments allows this magnificent region to preserve its wild character so appreciated by lovers of peace and nature. The town of Roux enjoys a location between the mountains and the Cévennes, combining a more pleasant climate in an idyllic setting. New craft activities have been created.
Long before the Christian era, this country was criss-crossed by a prestigious road: La route du Pal.
You will also hear about the Sainte Abeille site:
The commune of Le Roux has kept a network of paths from Roman times allowing you to pass without difficulty, winter and summer, from the lower valleys of the Rhône and the Ardèche to those of the Haute Loire.
Archaeologists have unearthed the remains of a mysterious site there: Sainte Abeille, site of a Gallo-Roman temple dedicated to the sources of the Loire.
The stone of Sainte Abeille is now embedded in a wall of the church of Roux. Here is what the legend says: the monks of Mazan wanted to take this stone which was originally in the Gallo-Roman sanctuary of the same name, but could not carry it, while two Roussignol peasants managed to do so. This stone is reputed to be miraculous, according to the principle of frequent analogy in witchcraft, it cures ringing in the ears, you have to put your finger in the hole of the stone, before applying it to your ear to hope to heal.
At the beginning of the twentieth century, a railway project linking Aubenas to Le Puy via Le Roux was considered. Vast project abandoned but there remains a 3300 meter long tunnel transformed into a road tunnel, very practical in winter to go down into the valley when the snowy roads are difficult to pass.

Also worth seeing in Le Roux: the old Vigne café and the bread oven.
