Issarles Lake

Home/Natural heritage/Issarles Lake
Discover one of the jewels of the Ardèche mountains: Lake Issarlès. The latter fills an old maar crater and stretches over 97 ha at an altitude of 1000 m with an exceptional depth of more than 108 meters.

Description

You walk around it in an hour and a half along a shaded and signposted footpath of about 5 km. You have the possibility of renting pedal boats in order to discover the site seen from the inside. Swimming in its clear waters is supervised there in July and August. The Issarlès lake is also used by EDF to supply the Montpezat-sous-Bauzon hydroelectric power station. It is connected via underground galleries to the reservoirs on the Loire (La Palisse dam) and two of its tributaries on the Ardèche plateau, the Gage (Moulin de Peyron dam) and the Veyradeyre (La Grange dam). The waters of the Atlantic side are thus diverted towards the Fontaulière river, a tributary of the Ardèche (Mediterranean side). Apart from the summer period devoted to tourism, hydroelectric production leads to a significant tidal range at lake level.

Opening
