Roman church

Home/Built heritage/Roman church
The Saint-Jean-Baptiste de Lavillatte church was the seat of a commandery of the Hospitallers of Saint-Jean-de-Jérusalem.

Description

Of small dimensions, the Saint-Jean-Baptiste church is built in volcanic tuff and granite. The west facade, extended by a bell tower still fitted with its three beautiful bells, is buttressed by two large buttresses which give it an unusual trapezoidal shape. The single nave is made up of three bays, including a shorter choir bay. The apse is polygonal, inside and out. Finally, it is necessary to point out, on the south side, the trace of a walled up door.
