Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, jewel of the Ardèche mountain
A mound of volcanic origin that we call here "suc", Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc is one of the emblematic sites of Ardèche. For seven million years, it has dominated the surrounding area with its characteristic silhouette. Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc and the sources of the Loire
To best appreciate this classified site, there are different hiking trails. The main route, approximately 1,2 km long, climbs steeply up the side of the hillock. It requires 1 hour 30 minutes round trip on a fairly steep path, but it is worth the effort. In good weather, from the summit of Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc, you discover a 360° panorama. To the east, the Alps display their majestic peaks, while to the west extend the Cévennes with their rounded peaks and chestnut forests. To the northwest, the Cirque des Boutières is another unmissable site in the Ardèche mountains. Finally, to the south-east extends the Rhône valley.
Le Gerbier-de-Jonc is well known to schoolchildren of all generations for being the place where the Loire draws its source – or rather proven sources! Indeed, the river springs from three points, all located at the foot of the mountain, in the commune of Sainte-Eulalie: the geographical source, the authentic source and the true source! It's up to everyone to make up their own mind, along a lovely 3 km walk... In any case, the Sentier des Sources de la Loire is worth a look.
Hiking trails for everyone at Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc
A paradise for walkers, cyclists and horse riders, the Ardèche mountain offers numerous itineraries for all tastes. At Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc and the surrounding area, no less than 14 trails await you. For example, experienced hikers can complete the circumnavigation and ascent of the Suc in just over six hours, over a distance of approximately 16 km.
Le Gerbier-de-Jonc is located on the route of a long hike, called Traversée de la Montagne Ardéchoise. Reserved for seasoned athletes, this seven-day itinerary takes you to discover the contrasting landscapes and multiple attractions of the region. With a length of almost 90 km, it can be done on foot… or on snowshoes!
The “juices”, typical volcanic wonders of Ardèche
One of the main attractions of the region is these magmatic formations dating back several millennia. The area is also classified as a UNESCO Geopark.
There are multiple examples, the best known of which are the Mézenc and Gerbier-de-Jonc mountains. The Cinq Sucs trail, for its part, takes you in four hours to discover incredible peaks and panoramas.
