Calquières spinning mill, living wool museum

Home/Visits/Museums/Calquières spinning mill, living wool museum
From fleece to yarn, let yourself be guided to the rhythm of the exceptional machines of the last century, which in multiple stages transform the wool into fluff, into skeins ready to knit, all powered by a large paddle wheel and the magic of the water

Description

Discover the richness of an astonishing industrial heritage, living testimony to an essential activity in the past.
Langogne's more than thousand-year-old past has always been linked to its river, the Langouyrou, a tributary of the Allier: nourishing water, water from the washerwomen, healing water, water from the tanneries, water used to operate swifts and street mills. Calquieres.
It is since 1442 that we attest the presence of mills: blade mills, fulling mills and it is here that in the XNUMXth century, the ancestor of the Engles Boyer family, came to install a spinning mill.B
To discover the Filature des Calquières is to reconnect with its roots, with the wool past so rich in Gévaudan, it is to discover the history of water, men and a trade.

La Filature des Calquières, (machines classified in the Inventory of Historic Monuments, and registered building), is on the edge of the Langouyrou, supplied with water by a beal, a diversion of the Langouyrou. This water is used to drive a large paddle wheel 3m85 in diameter which, through an ingenious set of belts, powers all the machines in this Living Museum.
The ground floor houses the WHEEL OF THE MILL, a source of energy, as well as the washing basin, the wringer, and two beaters (to untangle the fleeces). This vertical wheel is driven by a 1m50 waterfall, and develops up to 3 to 4 HP.
The three carders on the first floor transform the wool, into layers, then into bobbins and finally into untwisted yarn.
You are in a XNUMXth century atmosphere, the office of the former spinner lets you imagine his work of yesteryear.
On the last level, under a beautiful structure, a museum space allows you to handle various tools, cards, spindles, looms, and don't forget to test your knowledge on the interactive terminals!!
Weaving courses are organized for small groups or individuals when possible, find out…
The scenography, the slideshow, the exhibition gallery, and the craft shop pleasantly complete your visit.
