borie bridge

Home/Built heritage/borie bridge
The Loire receives the waters of the Veyradeyre under the village of Lac d'Issarlès and then runs under the arches of the Borie bridge.

Description

The highest arch of this bridge, which has eight, measures 9 meters.
This imposing dimension testifies to the importance given to its construction to protect it from the risk of collapse with flooding, which is always possible.
Bridges were rare on the Loire in the past. To cross the river, which is not yet a river here, we used a system of ferries.
That of Issarles, downstream, was very used. Roughly built but solid, it was used to transport animals and people. The boatman operated it using a rope or chain stretched over the water.
