Description
Geo Side:
Majestic and instantly recognizable, Mont Gerbier-de-Jonc rises to 1,551 meters in the heart of the Ardèche plateau. This phonolitic volcanic peak, with its sugarloaf-shaped summit, is a true symbol of the Ardèche Mountains, both for its unique silhouette and its natural and cultural importance.
This is where France's longest river, the Loire, has its source. Three springs are noted at the foot of the mountain, including the famous "geographic source," which can be reached on foot along a designated trail. Climbing to the summit (about 30 minutes), hikers discover a magnificent 360° panorama of the Alps, the Cévennes, the Velay, and the volcanoes of the Massif Central.
The site, listed since 1933, is at the heart of the Monts d'Ardèche UNESCO Global Geopark and is home to the Maison de Site, an interpretive space dedicated to volcanism, natural heritage, and the nascent Loire River. In fine weather, the site vibrates to the rhythm of visitors who come to soak up the fresh air, unspoiled landscapes, and the fascinating history of this stone giant.
An unmissable place, between nature, geology and poetry.
